The English Teaching Assistant Program aims to foster interest in learning English in Taiwanese students and provide an opportunity for cultural exchange to both Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) and the host communities. The program brings American college graduates to underserved and mostly rual elementary schools for an 11-month period. During the period, Fulbright Taiwan supports and trains ETAs to be well prepared in serving as an English Teacher and an American cultural ambassador.
ETAs are placed in Taipei, Yilan, Taichung, Taitung, Kaohsiung, Hualien, and Kinmen. In each site, there is a local coordinator responsible for the following:
- Personal Support: coordinating and directing housing, transportation, health issues, etc.
- Communication: mediating between schools, administrators, and teachers
- Documentation: securing legal paperwork
A team of TEFL advisors based in Taipei as well as local advisors for each region also provide additional support, including TEFL workshops, feedback on biweekly reports, classroom observations, and research projects.
