How to Apply?

GRANT PERIOD

All grantees must begin their grants on August 1, 2020, in order to attend a four-week orientation program. The school year runs from September through June; including the orientation program, the grant period is a total of 11 months. There is no pre-departure orientation. 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Graduating seniors, recent graduates, and master's candidates who are interested in assisting local English teachers at elementary or junior high schools in Taiwan will be considered. Applicants from all majors are welcome but Education majors are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates must be native English-speakers and need to be adaptable, flexible, and independent, and need to enjoy working with children. Teaching experience is preferred, but not required. 

ETAs cannot be accompanied by dependents.

Additional Information: No Chinese language skills are required. All classroom instruction is in English. Mandarin study in Taiwan is highly encouraged.

Grantees will assist local English teachers at elementary or junior high schools in the following areas of Taiwan: Hualien, Kaohsiung, Kinmen, Taichung, Taitung, Taipei, and Yilan.

INELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates currently residing in Taiwan (or those who will be living in Taiwan during the 2020-2021 academic year) will not be considered.

  • Individuals with dual U.S.-Taiwanese citizenship or permanent residency are not eligible.

HEALTH DISCLOSURE & ELIGIBILITY

In compliance with Taiwanese government regulations regarding heath and employment in the school systems, all candidates must indicate in their applications if they suffer from any medical conditions that could impair their abilities to teach English.  Strict adherence to these regulations is MANDATORY.  Any attempts to omit or falsify information are immediate grounds for revoking/terminating the grant.  Fulbright applicants must include Medical Disclosures for applicable medical conditions at the end of the Statement of Grant Purpose.

Individuals with the following conditions cannot be placed in Taiwanese classrooms:

  • Visual impairments (conditions that cannot be corrected by glasses/contact lenses)

  • Hearing impairments above 40dB

  • HIV/AIDS infection, AIDS

In addition to the aforementioned conditions, other conditions that must be noted include, but are not limited to:

  • Conditions worsened by stress such as: Epilepsy, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, etc.

  • Severe food allergies including, but not limited to: nuts, shellfish, beans.

 

NATURE OF ASSIGNMENT

English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) are placed full-time in one or more elementary schools or junior high schools, usually assisting local English teachers. A few may teach independently. They are in school 35 hours per week. although only about 20 hours are actually spent in the classroom. Other work can include: consulting with teachers on American cultural issues and assisting in the editing or writing of educational materials for English teaching. ETAs are placed in schools located in Yilan County in northern Taiwan, in Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan, in Taichung City in central Taiwan, in Taitung County in south east Taiwan, in Hualien County in eastern coast of Taiwan, and in Kinmen County on an outlying island of Taiwan. Other assignments may also be made. 

Also, all ETAs are required to have the service projects during the grant period. ETAs can share their skills, learn from others, affect the lives of others, and experience the joy of serving people from many different cultures between Taiwan and U.S. This service work is in the assigned host community—making connections with person-to-person and doing genuinely contribution to communities for the better.

All development projects are organized to help deliver essential services identified by local coordinators.

Note: To assist in placement, candidates should indicated preferences in the Statement of Grant Purpose for any or all of the following: elementary school, junior high school, rural area, urban area, minority area, underprivileged area, large city, samll city, town, village, and/or island. Also, as for the service project, please describe what type of work you enjoy. Contrubute to a project that employs your professional skills - or try something new. Preferences are taken into considereation, but final assignments are based on the needs of the program.
