Teaching in Chiayi
Chiayi City
Compared to other sites, Chiayi City is unique. The Chiayi City Government has clearly communicated to partner schools that our ETA/ETF roles are those of "Teaching Assistants (TAs)." As such, each grantee’s teaching responsibility in any given class should not exceed 50%.
The workload for grantees in Chiayi City is generally less demanding than in other sites, as each partner school already has other foreign English teachers. This means our grantees are not the sole foreign instructors, resulting in a lighter workload.
However, this also means that grantees have relatively less teaching authority in schools compared to other sites.
That said, most of the partner schools are very cooperative and easy to work with!
Chiayi County
Chiayi County offers a unique blend of rural charm and community-oriented school environments. The schools in Chiayi County are generally smaller, more spread out, and have fewer resources compared to those in urban cities. However, this often results in a tighter-knit community where both teachers and students are welcoming and eager to engage, even though the English proficiency levels of students tend to be very low. ETAs in Chiayi County frequently find themselves deeply integrated into their local communities, gaining invaluable insights into rural Taiwanese life and traditions, and feeling more sense of teaching achievement through the school year.
Chiayi County schools are either small-sized (100~200 students) or middle-sized (300~900 students). Most ETAs co-teach in their classes with a Local English Teacher by "one teaching, one drifting", "team teaching", or "parallel teaching". There are 5-30ish students per class, mostly with lower English proficiency levels, and being shy to speak at the very start, which makes the ETAs more valuable and gives the ETAs a deep sense of accomplishment.
In addition, we cooperate with schools with the specialty of astronomical AI experimental education, FIRST Robotics Competition, Chinese orchestra, concert band, baseball team, unicycle, swimming, badminton, table tennis, athletics, English podcast project, etc. ETAs will also get the chance to learn Mandarin, Taiwanese Tâi-gí, and Tsou indigenous language with the students! If you are interested in the above unique subjects, you may explore a lot at the schools in Chiayi.
For those who are adaptable, open to cultural immersion, and enjoy a mix of outdoor activities and community engagement, Chiayi County provides a fulfilling and enriching experience. Whether it’s bonding with students in small schools, exploring local townships, or participating in cultural events, ETAs can expect a diverse and rewarding teaching journey.
