Hsinchu Overview

Location
Located in northwestern Taiwan, Hsinchu County sits between Taoyuan City to the north and Miaoli County to the south, with the Taiwan Strait along its western edge. The county stretches from coastal plains to mountainous inland townships. While often associated with nearby Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County has its own distinct identity, known for its strong Hakka heritage, rural landscapes, and its close connection to Taiwan’s high-tech industry through the Hsinchu Science Park.

Weather
Temperatures generally range from about 6 °C in winter to around 35 °C in summer. The area is famous for its strong seasonal winds, especially from autumn to spring, which have earned the region the nickname “Windy City” (shared with Hsinchu City). Summers are hot and humid, while winters are relatively mild and dry.

Tom Tang

Hi, my name is Tom. I was born in Kaohsiung, studied in Kinmen, and worked as a tour guide for four years and an intern co-teacher with Fulbright ETA for a semester in Kinmen. I served as the New Taipei Coordinator in 2024 and currently a coordinator in Matsu and Hsinchu. Beyond my professional role, I am deeply engaged in Taiwanese culture and history. I enjoy writing blogs and capturing Taiwan’s landscapes through photography, including pictures of living in Matsu on the website

Words for Incoming ETAs/ETFs:

Compared to mainland Taiwan, public transportation in Matsu is limited, and scooters are the most practical way to get around. Life here is quieter and more close-knit. You may quickly find yourself knowing everyone in the community. The combination of a supportive local environment and stunning natural scenery creates a rewarding and meaningful teaching experience.

Matsu is especially well suited for ETAs and ETFs who enjoy designing more independent lessons, leading non-traditional or project-based classes, and taking initiative in school and community activities. If you are adaptable, positive, comfortable using Chinese, and appreciate quiet, small-community living, Matsu may be an excellent fit for you. Join us in Matsu County to make a meaningful impact, grow as an educator, and experience Taiwan’s rich culture in a uniquely immersive setting.
