Teaching in Southern Hualien

School Situations

In southern Hualien, school sizes vary significantly. While a few larger schools have around 300 students, the majority are small schools with populations ranging from 15 to 80 students. In some of these institutions, formal English instruction begins in the third grade.

The teaching role is based at a single school. Beyond standard English lessons, the curriculum allows for the integration of English into other subjects and activities, such as PE, Art, Music, and various extracurricular clubs.

Schools in this region are known for their unique specialized programs and local activities. These include hands-on agriculture and food education, and traditional crafts like bamboo weaving. Students also explore music through instruments like the Ukulele and Erhu, and participate in diverse language programs covering Indigenous languages, Hakka, and Taiwanese.
