Matsu Overview

Location
Located off Taiwan’s northwestern coast, the Matsu Islands lie in the Taiwan Strait, just a short distance from mainland China’s Fujian coast. Administratively known as Lienchiang County, Matsu consists of several main islands, including Nangan, Beigan, Dongyin, and Juguang. Historically a frontline military zone, Matsu has gradually transformed into a unique island region known for its maritime culture, stone villages, and strategic location between Taiwan and China.

Weather
Matsu has a subtropical maritime climate. Temperatures typically range from around 3 °C in winter to about 32 °C in summer. Winters are often cool, windy, and foggy, while spring and early summer are known for frequent sea fog. Summers are warm and humid, and late summer to early autumn can be affected by typhoons.

Tom Tang

Hi, my name is Tom. I was born in Kaohsiung, studied in Kinmen, and worked as a tour guide for four years and an intern co-teacher with Fulbright ETA for a semester in Kinmen. I served as the New Taipei Coordinator in 2024 and currently a coordinator in Matsu and Hsinchu. Beyond my professional role, I am deeply engaged in Taiwanese culture and history. I enjoy writing blogs and capturing Taiwan’s landscapes through photography, including pictures of living in Matsu on the website

Words for Incoming ETAs/ETFs:

Compared to mainland Taiwan, public transportation in Matsu is limited, and scooters are the most practical way to get around. Life here is quieter and more close-knit. You may quickly find yourself knowing everyone in the community. The combination of a supportive local environment and stunning natural scenery creates a rewarding and meaningful teaching experience.

Matsu is especially well suited for ETAs and ETFs who enjoy designing more independent lessons, leading non-traditional or project-based classes, and taking initiative in school and community activities. If you are adaptable, positive, comfortable using Chinese, and appreciate quiet, small-community living, Matsu may be an excellent fit for you. Join us in Matsu County to make a meaningful impact, grow as an educator, and experience Taiwan’s rich culture in a uniquely immersive setting.
